Patricia M. Zárate, PhD, Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research and University of Florida, FL, USA

Research interests: Sea turtles, sharks and other large pelagic animals. My field of research has involved population dynamics and applied ecology for marine ecosystem conservation and fisheries management. I have focused my research on the study of the reproductive biology, ecological role and connectivity of highly migratory organisms by the use of mark and recapture, stable isotopes, genetics and satellite telemetry, among others. I have done extensive research on sea turtles from the Galapagos Islands and currently undertaking a satellite telemetry shark tagging project on pelagic sharks in Chilean waters. I currently hold a position as Researcher in the Fisheries Research Division at the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), Chile.

 

Aisha Ahmed Belal, Associate Professor of Marine Invertebrates, National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Suez, Egypt

Research interests: Hydrobiology (Benthic Invertebrates ). Monitoring of benthic invertebrates in the bordered line of Egypt; Red Sea , Suez Gulf , Suez Canal and some of the surrounding habitats, in relation to the physico-chemical characteristics of the water. The activity including the sampling, identification, taxonomy and counting of the different species of benthic invertebrates , especially Taxonomy and Ecology of Polychaetes (Annelida: Polychaeta) from 1996 up till now. As well as the isolation & purification of some dominant species for bioassay studies.

 

Daniel Torruco, PhD, Coral Reef Lab., Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN, México

Research interests: Has experience on Coastal Ecology, developing studies on: coastal regions and continental shelf/slope, and marine habitats with macrobenthic assemblages of fauna and flora. Has also experience on the evaluation socioeconomic and monitoring of anthropogenic impacts in the coastal zone; on the evaluation of local and global climate changes concerning reef habitats as the relationship between the fauna and flora and the environmental variables. Recently, develops studies on biodiversity in the deep benthos in the Gulf of Mexico and corals reef of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Research interests: aquatic metabolism, especially about primary production and respiration in freshwaters subtropical lakes, and the relationship between these metabolic processes and the biological and physical and chemical variables.

Research interests: Has experience on Biological Oceanography and macrobenthic ecology, developing studies on macrobenthic assemblages from rocky shores, coastal regions (estuaries and sandy beaches) and marine habitats (continental shelf/slope). Has also experience on the evaluation of anthropogenic impacts upon the macrozoobenthos (harbor activities and biological invasions); on the evaluation of both local/global climate changes concerning benthic habitats as well as the relationship between the fauna and the environmental variables. Environmental Economic evaluation studies have been carried out under his supervision at Pong Dam (Himachal Pradesh) and Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve (Tamil Nadu). He is currently supervising many wetland management projects such as “the Restoration of Point Calimere Great Vedaranyam Swamp (Tamil Nadu) for the benefit of fisheries and migrant shorebirds”, funded by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Another waterbird ecology project implemented by him at the internationally important Chilika Lake (Orissa) has documented the nutritive value of guano deposited by waterbirds and the beneficial role played by them for the fishermen.

He had taken part in the project of systematics, distribution, zoogeography, molecular investigation and conservation of the Red Sea fishes. A large part of the project is molecular database of all Red Sea fishes in comparison with fishes of the Indo-Pacific region.

He got his Doctor degree in Ecology in 2001, at the University of Campinas (Unicamp), Campinas, Brazil and He concluded a post-doc in the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia in 2008.

Research interests: I am currently involved on environmental impact monitoring of different project activities undertaken within the Arabian Gulf and in Red Sea areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as researcher in a public university based research institute. Alfonso Aguilar-Perera, PhD

Research interests: Conservation biology of grouper (Epinephelidae) aggregations in the Mexican Caribbean, and recently in the Gulf of Mexico. Also, he investigates the invasion of the red lionfish off the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the Southern Gulf of Mexico. He is member of the IUCN groupers and wrasses specialist group and the Science for Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations (SCRFA).
